Gallery Kayafas Exhibition

Today, I took down my solo exhibition at Gallery Kayafas. It was a spectacular experience to show my Hong Kong series in this way- and the press and feedback I received was humbling, including being reviewed in the Phoenix and subsequently the Arts & Events Cover Image for the week.  Thank you to Arlette Kayafas, and everyone who came to support the exhibition!

I suppose this means…onto the next one.

Movin’ on up: Greer Muldowney’s photography

By GREG COOK  |  January 30, 2013

It’s night in Greer Muldowneys photo. Bright lights illuminate cranes perched atop a row of skyscrapers in Hong Kong, all seemingly sprouting overnight, simultaneously.

The title of the Somerville photographer’s show at Gallery Kayafas, “6,426 per km2,” references Hong Kong’s ranking as one of the world’s most densely peopled metropolises. But she’s wary of the critique in many photos of China’s building boom - depicting astonishing development, environmental degradation, old neighborhoods flattened to make way for the new.

“There’s a very Westernized perception… . It’s very bleak. It’s very gray,” she says. “I just don’t think that it’s fair to say they’re doing everything wrong … when they’re just trying to emulate us.”

For six months beginning in 2010, she documented the strata of the city’s development - Chinese and colonial buildings of the 1950s and ’60s stand amidst 1970s and ’80s towers, which themselves are dwarfed by new skyscrapers. She records cheery colored facades and breathing space between towers, but her eye can’t resist the relentless architectural geometry. Which blunts her fresh insights.

“Hong Kong and Kowloon Peninsula are growing up instead of out - like us,” she notes. “They built this city to be as dense as possible to save more green space in the mountains.”

Recent Commercial Work

Every once in a while I photograph small businesses in the Boston area. Recently, I photographed Bodily Kneads, Inc., a massage therapy practice in Brookline Village, Ma.  Jean Svizzero, the owner and lead therapist, was great to work with- specializing in both therapeutic massage and shiatsu techniques.

Two Students and their First Exhibitions!

Off Campus, that is…

The holidays must be over, as I have gotten invites and emails about new exhibitions and exhibition opportunities at a frantic rate. Locally,  All Visual Boston is back up and running, The Griffin Museum is showing Mary Beth Meehan and David Pace,  and I have two very talented students that are having their first professional exhibitions this coming week.  I won’t lie- I’m super proud- but you can go to the exhibitions and check them out for yourself.

Lindsey Camilli is in her first group show, “This Narrow Distance” at the Worcester Center for Crafts.  She joins fellow artists Stephen DiRado, Hank Hauptmann,  Sarah Bilotta, Keiko Hiromi and Robert Johnson in this fantastic photographic exploration of portraiture.

image

Her “Elderly Series” will be featured  January 17 through February 9. Camilli’s beautiful images explore the brutal details and emotion of growing old in these stark portraits.

I hope you can join her and the other artists at the opening on Thursday, January 17.

Meg Lowney will have her debut as the “Featured Emerging Artist” at Panopticon Gallery this month.

image

Meg’s exploration of human and physical nature is a visual treat in her, “Texture Series,” which will be on display January 11 through February 25.

image

Go check them out and be sure to ask Meg about these wonderful double exposures at her opening on Friday the 11th!

New Show, New Year!

Hello all! I have been neglecting the blog as of late, but have many things on the docket that seem more than TUMBLR worthy- so I’m going to try and stick with it.

Tonight I will keep it short as I have 3 syllabi to work on and school starts this week.  This is probably not that exciting to most of you…though I’m writing a class called, “Propaganda in 20th Century Conflict,” that is going to be lots of fun, just in case you’d like to give it a gander…

Classes are not the only things starting this week, however.  This coming Friday the 11th is the opening reception for my exhibition at Gallery Kayafas.  Today, Matt and I dropped off the 15 pieces that will be on display from January 11 through February 16th.  If you are in the Boston area, please stop by!

Tony Fouhse on The Flash Forward Festival

Tonight marks the end of the Flash Forward Festival here in Boston- for which I have been on the planning committee for 6 months.  It was a fantastic event hosted by the Magenta Foundation with multiple guests, exhibitions and speakers that came to the 3 day event.

Needless to say, I’m a bit tired and at a loss for brain power, but one of our wonderful speakers, Tony Fouhse, has already put up a great post about some of the activities that happened over the last few days.  So, I’m re-blogging his Foto-drool for now, but will have more info and photos to come!

Synonymous

I have had a few minutes to peruse the guilty pleasure that is tumblr now that the classes that I teach have come to a close. I have become perplexed by what I have found beyond the more mainstream and friendly blogs that I follow. Mostly in this perplexing relationship of .gif files:

Why is it that kitten and soft-core porn short stream video files go hand-in-hand? And why would anyone post either and think it was a good representation of their personal taste?

This may be one of the few things Freud is still valid in analyzing.

My intro to black and white photography students had their final today.  They were a pretty awesome group; though clearly they don’t stand still.
